Australia’s first retirement living village for arts patrons featured on Perspective Global

Leading international architecture and design firm, ThomsonAdsett, has designed Australia’s first retirement living village for arts patrons.

Taking its name from Arthur Streeton, one of Australia’s most celebrated artists, Streeton Park is located a short walk from the Heide Museum of Modern Art and overlooks the Yarra River in Melbourne. Recently completed, the $40m project accommodates 85 premium independent living apartments, alongside a business centre, fine dining restaurant, sports bar, salon and wellness centre.

ThomsonAdsett studio leader for Victoria Tieran Kimber says the development indicates the growing need to design for varied lifestyles and interests. “There is no other retirement living village that caters specifically to arts patrons, and it has been keenly awaited here in Melbourne,” he says.

The spaces are designed for maximum socialisation and activity between residents, yet also provide resting points for those with low mobility. Colour, materials and textures have been incorporated thoughtfully to appeal to those who enjoy the arts. “Streeton Park is designed for the innovators of Melbourne, and Australia. We have very carefully curated every detail from artwork to light fittings, to appeal to those passionate about creativity,” notes Kimber.

AIA Far North Queensland Regional Architecture Awards 2023 – Regional Commendation for Commercial Architecture

Crystalbrook Riley has received the Eddie Oribin Award for Building of the Year, as well as a regional commendation for Commercial Architecture in the 2023 Australian Institute of Architects’ Far North Queensland Regional Architecture Awards.

Designed by CA Architects and Thomson Adsett, the Cairns hotel consists of refurbished accommodation wings housing 256 rooms and a new accommodation tower with additional 55 rooms.

An expansive lagoon pool is located below the accommodation wings, with undulating sculptural decks positioned at different levels. The architects have merged interiors and exteriors, allowing visitors to navigate between public and private areas.

The new tower with a glazed façade includes a bar and restaurant on rooftop, which the judges described as “cleverly disparate from the renovated building behind”.

“By challenging local town planning concepts and positioning this ambitious tower on the corner of the site, the negative space between the buildings has taken on a new life, and the tower acts as a significant marker along the Cairns foreshore landscape,” the jury said.

The region’s commended projects will now progress to Queensland Architecture Awards.
