Redevelopment of the existing hospital with a heightened focus on future-proofing to support future trends in health care.

This project was a collaboration between ThomsonAdsett, HPI and Cox Rayner to undertake a campus wide redevelopment of Townsville Hospital.

Future-proofing formed a key principle of the redevelopment and included life cycle considerations, possible re-fit, expansion and redevelopment opportunities of current and proposed new infrastructure. Soft and shell spaces were included as future-proofing solutions.

The Townsville Hospital Redevelopment was a four-stage redevelopment procured in five packages across a timespan of six years. The stages included:

Stage 1 – Expansion of the emergency department to 75 beds, a new 34-bed inpatient ward (initially designed as Acute Inpatients but used temporarily as a Maternity Ward for staging purposes) and expansion of the existing medical imaging department. Also, there was a new 16-bed short stay ward, and shell space for new ICU and future doctors’ offices.

Stage 2 – Relocation and expansion of existing intensive care unit to 30 beds into the Stage 1 shell space, incorporating four paediatric intensive care unit beds, then the expansion and relocation of the 50-cot neonatal intensive care unit into the prior ICU space, plus one new birthing room.

Stage 3A – Two new operating theatre expansions (orthopaedic and cardiac) including readiness for digital integration, additional sterile store, new scrub bays and anaesthetic induction bays, clean up room expansion, and biomedical workroom expansion. The package also included shell space on floors below, some fitted out for Department of Anaesthetics staff. Medical office overnight accommodation fit-out in Stage 1 shell space.

Stage 3 – Major expansion of the pathology department including PC3 laboratory, new four storey southern ward block designed for approximately 30 beds per floor with levels 1 and 3 reserved as shell space, new Paediatric Oncology unit in the ground floor of the existing ward block, new four-storey clinical Support and Services building containing mortuary, waste management, expanded kitchen and laundry, medical records, doctors lounge, secure pharmacy store, and staff amenities.

Stage 4 – Major expansion of the oncology department including three new linear accelerators, shell space and staff amenities above, fit-out of some the Stage 3A shell space with new Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Suites adjacent to the Stage 1 medical imaging expansion.
