Coolah Health and Aged Care Services – Multi Purpose Service

A project designed for a variable local climate. Naturally ventilated with expansive views across the Valley of the Winds to enhance residents’ lifestyles.

ThomsonAdsett designed the refurbishment and extension to the Coolah Multi Purpose Service (MPS) – a small, rural healthcare facility in New South Wales.

The existing facility was expanded to include an additional 15 residential aged care bedrooms, refurbished inpatient rooms, associated support spaces and renovated general practitioner rooms.

Dining and activity spaces link separated accommodation wings with associated lounge rooms, nooks, decks and salon. The new building commands expansive views across the Valley of the Winds from the bedrooms, lounge room and deck while a secure courtyard gives early-stage dementia sufferers a sunny location for recreation. ThomsonAdsett met the challenge of providing residential comfort with clinical service by segregating functions within building wings.

Coolah has been designed for a variable local climate, often exceeding temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius and falling below zero. All residential aged care spaces are naturally ventilated with windows and ceiling fans to provide comfort.

Coolah provides residents a safe, functional and home-like environment with a physical and visual separation from patients and the adjoining clinical spaces. A variety of spaces provide opportunities for social interaction ranging from intimate one-on-one meetings to larger communal functions.
