The Yaamba Road Pedestrian Overpass in Rockhampton is one of a number of projects around Queensland commissioned by the Department of Transport and Main Roads to provide safe pedestrian access across main roads for school students of divided campuses.
The architectural opportunity was to create a local landmark that enhances the quality of the public realm. The architectural strategy was to imbue a utilitarian piece of urban infrastructure with urban artwork qualities, recognising that this is a structure observed by many from moving vehicles. Within the pragmatic constraints of the project budget we sought to give the bridge a dynamic quality.
The arrangement of the galvanised angle support stanchions for the perforated mesh cladding suggests movement, while the overlapping facades create a changing pattern as vehicles move towards the bridge. Materials were selected for robustness, longevity and ease of maintenance.
